p51™ qPCR Lab
With the spread of the Covid-19 virus, a common buzzword used when visiting the clinic to get tested is PCR test. Find out the science behind this 21th century technology that revolutionised biology when it was first proposed. Experience how labs run a PCR test in real time. Don’t worry we won’t get you to do a nose swab…

Program Details
This learning lab offers students an introduction to the world of quantitative PCR. Using low-cost tools, student will be able to directly visualise the amplification of DNA and will be able to calculate relative concentrations of DNA template.
Learning Outcomes
- Micro-pipetting
- Principles and practice of qPCR techniques
- Establish that qPCR can be used to measure nucleic acid concentrations
- Relate how reporter molecules such as fluorophores can be used to infer quantitative information.
- Gel electrophoresis*
- Staining, visualization, and molecular weight analysis of DNA fragments.
